From her humble beginnings, the 37 year old seamstress shares how she started her small business a few years ago and how it is still a success to date.

Prudence Mthombeni is a self made seamstress who started her sewing business in her backyard in the Soshanguve township. The 37 year old self employed mother of one started sewing at an early age she states, she used to practice designs she saw on television and also patch torn clothes for friends and family.

In 2014, she decided to buy two different sewing machines and tried sewing 5 different dresses and used them to market herself.The seamstress has been working alone since 2014 and says it is simply because she cannot afford any employees yet,’i work well alone, i do need helpers though but  would rather find people to help me when i know i’m financially stable and can afford to pay my employees’,she said.

The photo’s above show some of Mthombeni’s amazing work. The seamstress moved her business to a mobile container across the street so people can see her work. She advertises her designs by hanging them on the front door of her mobile container. When Prudence was asked about her future plans , she mentioned that ‘ My plans this year would be supplying more local schools in Pretoria with school uniform and also make my business well-known nationally’.

She has done wedding gowns ,school uniform for local primary schools and also traditional clothing.Mthombeni advertises her work on both Whatsapp and Facebook, she hopes to generate enough funds to create pamphlets and also states that a lot of her customers advertise her products.
